In the wake of The Sword In The Stone Part 1: also crazy shippers keep to your own tags please damnit.
Loving the spike of plot discussion/speculation/nit picking/loling that I’m seeing going on in the Merlin fandom. THIS is what I want more of in my fandom thanks, less bloody 24-hour shipping.
Speaking of which: it’s my opinion that the writers write Merthur infinitely better than they do Arwen. But some Merthur fans are being ridiculous- whining about the ending after a whole episode of practically everything your ship, and wrecking havoc in the Arwen tag and people’s asks? Just… seriously, grow up. As for the Arwenites: a lot of you are being very self-righteous. Which would be understandable if the scene in question was amazing, but it really wasn’t. And it was about a minute long. Plus the original legends don’t support Arwen in the end either, so those of you quoting those as gospel, stop. It.
Both groups, please take your fighting out of the merlin tag, it’s annoying. I want my merlin tag to mostly talk about the show; stuff like people’s reactions to the EPISODE (not just the shipping), how the actors pwned this part 1, where the hell the missing knights went, magic reveal theories, and how the close-up on Merlin’s eyes was cheekily recycled from season 1. And how Gwaine is back to being kickass again, hurrah!
I think I want it to happen, but I don’t want it to happen yet.
Am I the only one? Or am I just thinking the whole “reveal” is a fandom cocktease? Just something to add to the drama that won’t actually happen. Either way, I won’t get my hopes up.
I’ve been sitting on a thought.
The Merlin in the legends and most adaptations is portrayed as the teacher/wise old man; what if they’re playing it that the legends are so because Merlin ALWAYS used Dragoon to play his role in the story? And we were only handed down the correct name Merlin due to others that knew/it was found out after everything. Then again, Colin said in an interview that the old man in Morgana’s vision of the Battle of Camlann is in fact Merlin, not him as Dragoon. So I suppose somewhere between now and old age there’d have to be a reveal. Although that still doesn’t sound like it’ll happen within the span of 5 seasons.
We decided it would be nice to do something to honour Eoin’s next birthday, on the 21st February 2012, by presenting him with a gift in the form of donations to a charity of his choosing. After contacting his agent at troikatalent, they replied saying it was a lovely idea, and suggested we donate to a charity with a purpose close to Eoin’s heart - one that is dedicated to researching a cure for brain tumours aswell as helping those who have been affected by it. Eoin himself, apparently, doesn’t have a specific charity, so we searched for one ourselves that is dedicated to that cause. And we hope you are all happy with the decision we made. Details of the chosen charity can be found below.
Every time I see posts about seme-uke dynamics, I can’t help but think - don’t you realize we can’t compare the Japanese fandom with the Western fandom?
Our Western world grew up on completely different norms and views of relationships and sexual roles, both in homosexual and heterosexual relationships. The Japanese culture has its own rule for sex, just as we in Western world have, and makes people slip into extremely active and extremely passive roles - therefore the crying uke syndrome in doujinshis.
I really recommend to read this great article for better understanding, it’s written from the point of view of a foreign girl, living and dating men in Japan.
“The biggest difference is that sex in Japan is not a mutual sharing experience with both partners spontaneously doing whatever they feel like or enjoy whenever they feel like doing it. Sex has rules and sex has roles just as every social interaction in Japan has rules and roles. There is an active partner and a passive partner. Active means moving; passive means unmoving. In heterosexual sex, the active partner is always male, and the passive partner is always female. In gay sex you work out your roles beforehand: the seme is active, the uke is passive (for gay guys); the tachi is active, the neko is passive (for gay women). If you are familiar with seme/uke conventions from yaoi manga, you can use them as a way of relating to what I’m talking about, because those conventions are not a fictional construct, randomly decided upon by a group of yaoi mangaka. Straight people have sex like that too, in reality.”
Of course we can’t say this applies for everybody, it’s always hard to generalize and I don’t want to stick a whole nation into one box. I’m just saying that the Japanese have a distinctly different idea of sexual roles than we do, and that comparing Japanese art/stories and their insight on sexuality presented, let’s say, in doujinshis, to our Western point of view, is definitely mixing apples with oranges. Or tuna in some cases.
Regarding the whole shitshow surrounding Olivia's fb & YT accounts
Hacker person(s?), you have not only disgraced the involved fandom, but also all manners of common sense and decency. Get yourself some psychiatric help you sick twisted… fiend. Fandom: The video is one thing as everyone was confused for a bit, but all the people sharing the fb screencaps, cut that shit out, there’s no way you can possibly believe that’s appropriate, unless you are in actuality brain-dead.
Random cenario for ya: Someone e-mails you a link to a ‘funny video’ of someone you know; a friend, co-worker, distant cousin, whatever. He is dancing and screwing around at what is clearly a private party. The vid has been posted by his ex girlfriend, who says she didn’t mean to make it public. How would you react? Would you quickly save it, then make gifs and funny drawings and send it to all of your friends? What if, following this, the vid goes private, then suddenly reappears again. Would you still think “nah, she probably meant for it to be public, lulz, LET’S SHARE THE FUN!” Can you honestly say you’d consider that legit?
Here’s what I don’t get.
How did it not occur to anyone that a vid that was clearly never intended for public consumption might not be a good idea to reblog, gif, and make fucking fan art out of?! I really, honestly don’t care if you thought it had actually been posted by Olivia Poulet, intentionally or not - when you treat private pictures and/or vids like you would some silly promotional photoshoot, you are being disrespectful. PERIOD. Not to mention that the fake Olivia told people not to share it, which no one respected anyway.
And now people are falling over themselves apologizing. Look, I’m not saying those who reblogged or did fannish adaptations of the vid are bad people. I’m just saying, you know, you’re allowed to think.
Update - Nov 20th 2011: Added links to several resource Tumblogs, plus a bunch of websites.
A.K.A. “Pato is autistic and shows off his massive collection of saved links”
Have a seat, get a cup of coffee and sit through this. Hopefully you won’t regret it. This is mostly about illustration, by the way.
FREQUENTLY ASKED BULLSHIT
“WHICH TABLET SHOULD I BUY?”
Get the cheapest shit available. If you’re in America/Europe a Wacom Bamboowhatever apparently does the trick. If you’re anywhere else get the cheaper-end Genius ones because Wacom tablets are expensive in every place that’s not the first world. Getting a $600 tablet will not make you magically improve and it’s a goddamn waste of money. Too poor for tablets? Start with a damn pencil.
“POORFAG HERE, CAN’T AFFORD PHOTOSHOP/SAI, WHAT THE FUCK DO I DO?”
This is the Internet, pirate the shit out of them! Here’s a list of freeware programs you could use, because pirating is bad, mkay.
More links coming SOON! (Soon: Duke Nukem Forever).
“I’M TOO MUCH OF A FAILURE I WILL NEVER IMPROVE”
Spoilers: Improvement will take a long time, specially more if you’re self-taught. Improvement requires dedication and consistenct in your learning. Don’t expect to get great if you’ve just started, and don’t expect greatness in the first year or so either. Save the shit you draw so in the future you can notice that progress has indeed been made.
Artist’s Block is a very complicated thing but the underlying reason is either lack of creativity, acedia or (this case being the most common one) just a towering pile of bullshit. The best way to treat it is to take up theoretical drawing (anatomy studies, for example) and treat it as a chore. If you need ideas look for the Ideas Generators section below.
“HOW DO I APPROACH TUTORIALS?”
Tutorials are to be approached the way they are meant to be approached. Only two things are to be considered when using them, and that is do not take the author for granted and do not forget to use it as a reference instead of a fixed set of instructions. The tutorial author may not be as great as you may think, and copypasting directly will not only yield horrible results but will also kill all the vitality and creativity you may have when producing.
NOW, ONTO THE ACTUAL LIST THING.
All links taken without permission but I’m sure nobody minds a bit of publicity.
/ic/’s Recopilation - A 4.2GB books torrent. FUCKING GET IT. (The torrent description also has a list for more books, check those out too)
Simple practice method for the aimless artfag: Open any of the first two links, and choose a distinct category (For example, faces). Tell it to switch every 10 minutes if possible; else, get a timer. Fire it up and start drawing what you see. The idea is that you should stop after 10 minutes and move onto the next one, no matter how incomplete it is. Repeat until your art gets showcased in the Louvre.
COLOR THEORY AND MISCELLANEOUS COLORING FOR THE MASSES
Conceptart.com - These guys are fucking sweet. Actually, “fucking sweet” doesn’t do enough justice - these guys are awesome. Awesome as balls.
DeviantArt - Well, think about it. It is an art community after all. Needless to say, tread carefully and have your critic eye open.
/ic/ @ 4chan - Yes, I’m aware, 4chan etc. But these people are hardly what you may think they are: they will actually help your ass out and give you one of the most accurate types of criticism I’ve ever seen. Beware of slightly-more-frequent-than-usual troll activity, and try to refrain from posting your weeabooshit for everyone’s sake.
If you want me to add something, please notify me through my /ask. If you have a compilation of resources/you run a blog/etc, don’t be ashamed in whoring it out to me and tell me through /ask too. Be sure to check back often as I’ll be adding more things!
This shouldn’t be surprising, but I take issue with “The Hunter’s Heart”.
Arthur says, at the end, “How can I love someone who betrayed me?” This bothers me. If he actually did love her which I will continue to doubt until the end of time for reasons I feel are perfectly legitimate and justified, but whatever ship who you damn well please, I’ll fume loudly on my blog, he wouldn’t just stop because she kissed Lancelot. You don’t just stop loving someone, no matter what they’ve done. Feelings kind of don’t work like that.
The issue isn’t whether or not he loves her but whether or not he can trust her. He says, when he talks to Merlin about banishing her, that he’ll probably forgive her but he won’t be able to trust her, and as a king and a husband, he can’t not trust his wife and queen.
It really bothers me that they’re trying to make it seem like Arthur/Gwen is so epic that he loves her even after what she did and she was enchanted, blah blah blah, let me tell you how I feel about that little tweak and that is why they’re destined to be together. Love isn’t the issue. It was never about him not loving her anymore. It was about him not trusting her.
I know I spout a lot of A/G hate, and I do. Because I really, really dislike them and don’t believe them and think they’re forced and have no chemistry. And scenes like this, where I think the writers think we haven’t been paying attention and they can just - they can change the point. Because the POINT was that Arthur can’t trust her. He can still love her not that he does but trust is just as important.
So, I just really wish the writers would stop trying to emphasize their relationship. If they really believed in it, I don’t think they would need to reinforce it so drastically every single week. Like they know we don’t buy it, or don’t like it, and keep trying to convince us. It makes it less convincing the more they try.
It’s a good thing Arthur and Merlin and everyone else, I suppose, except for Agravaine and Gaius, although Gaius is awesome where Agravaine is Uncle Skeazy are so damn pretty.
Oh because Gwen has obviously given her life for yours 32579812375345 times, or been willing to die for you just as many times, or risked burning at the stake to save Arthur and Camelot, or ya know lost his father, or been willing to risk ANYTHING to make sure Arthur becomes king. He didn’t poison a friend, or NEVER EVER let Arthur fight alone. Lied to make sure that Arthur wouldn’t kill Uther, a man that destroyed his very essence, that made his father leave him as a small child. He’s made sure NO ONE killed Uther, when he has no allegiance to the man WHATSOEVER.
